Networking’s the Secret

We are going to continue with our theme of highlighting local businesses and promoting success breeds success to combat the wave of negativity that is dished out on the evening news. So, let me share with you a great group of people that I have discovered in the past few weeks that literally provides me with an infusion of enthusiasm that gets me through the week. They are called “Networking’s the Secret” and meet every Tuesday at noon at the Pizza Factory in Ancestor Square.

Besides getting a good deal on lunch (all you can eat pizza & salad for $6), you get a chance to meet with other professionals and entrepeneurs, and of course NETWORK! It’s good to see what

Unlike other networking groups, this one is not exclusionary so that any number of people in the same field are welcome. The message is not about beating the competition, rather it’s about learning from one another and sharing success. If you are in sales, have your own business, or have a product you want to market, then I highly suggest that you check this group out.

for more info like them on facebook (they are one of my likes and if you haven’t liked StGeorgeMassage.com, you go do it now!) or got www.networkingsthesecret.com

Supporting local business “Creative Minds Learning Center”

Last month we were glad to support our friend Maria Vaccaro Bithell and her work in our community through Kidz on Stage/Dixie Dance. We were gratified by your response and have decided to continue this trend for the next few months by highlighting other local businesses worthy our your support. We are grateful for your support that has seen our efforts rewarded by continual success and in these days of stress over our economic conditions, we all have an obligation to assist and aide those who are making a difference. So if you know of a local business or enterprise that we should high light, let us know.

This month we want to tell you about our neighbors at “Creative Minds”. Without a doubt this has become my favorite place to take my 2 year old grandson to engage in play and interaction with other kids. Patterned after discovery museums, this facility is loaded with sections designed to stimulate imagination. There are sections where the child can pretend they are Stahlei farm, Lin's Supermarket, an auto shop, dress up on the Tuacahn stage , and a Pirate ship just to name a few examples. Since this is all indoors, it's a great way to beat the heat or have something to do on a blustery day. Please check them out on facebook.

We Can Make a Difference!

I am sitting in my hotel room this morning in Provo providing sports massage for High School swim team athletes at State finals. I love the enthusiasm of these teenagers and hope to make a difference as I warm up their bodies for optimal performance, help them recover, and stretch them to prevent injury.

There is a way you can make a difference too. There has been a lot of focus on “Buying Local” and helping local business. Let me suggest one for you. Most of you have followed my exploits with SGMT and other plays I have been in over the past few years. It’s one of my passions and a way to give back to this community. A person of great influence and a passion for the arts is Maria Vaccaro Bithell. She has been the choreographer for SGMT and responsible for teaching and guiding the performers. A great example was the phenomenal “Tap dancing” in “Singing in the Rain”. Here is a note I got from Maria yesterday that you should be aware of:

Hey all, hope everyone is doing GREAT!! As you may know I am know what use to be Center Stage is now Dixie Arts Conservatory (Kidz on Stage/Dixie Dance). We are still a non-profit studio and offer a huge variety of classes starting at age 1-Adult for extremely low prices. I am running a one man show now that Heather Hunt has moved out of state to start her new and exciting life. We have never and will never turn any student away due to finances as quite a few of our current students have experienced from other studio’s in town.
This is my passion in life and I am honored to teach and share my love and knowledge of the arts with everyone.
I have tried to start a sponsor a student program through the studio to help some of these kids out with their tuition. This semester I have encountered some absolutely incredibly talented kids who have found a love for dance and musical theater. Some of which struggle financially due to unemployment and health issues.
Some examples: Katie has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and was told she shouldn’t have even made it this far. To see this young lady in class is a true blessing, she is so alive and has the biggest smile on her face through the entire class. Her grandparents take care of her and her medical bills have drowned them.
Jordan 9yr little dude always wanted to tap. We found him a pair of shoes and it was like Christmas morning when he put them on, plus he a true tapper.
I could go on and on with many more. I scholarship and trade as much as I can for these students but it doesn’t pay the bills. I am writing you today to see if any would be interested in helping. As a sponsor your personal/business name will appear on all posters/programs and website. ($25 a month for the 1hr class). The students, parents and I would greatly appreciate your support. If you know of any other persons/businesses who would love to be involved please pass this on.

I sincerely thank you,

Maria Vaccaro/Bithell
435-669-3087

*Not only does Maria have a great influence on the youth in our community but you should know she offers “Adult Tap” and other classes you might be interested as well. Let her know you heard about her here. Help out this local business so that it doesn’t go away. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Happy Valentines Day!

Why Golf is like Life.

I love to play golf. I’m not especially good at it but that just doesn’t matter. There is a joy in the beauty of the outdoors and getting away for a little while. Even when I was able to play as often as 3 times a week when I lived in Texas in the 1990′s, I never managed to shoot better than the high to mid 80′s. Today when I’m lucky to play a half-dozen times a year, I don’t think I often even break 100. With a wicked slice and many other short comings you’d probably wonder what brings me back for such frustration. It takes a golfer to know, there’s even a favorite joke that says it all; it goes- “Why do they call it Golf? (answer) because all the other four letter words were taken”. We share the joy of our pain.

It’s not the errant shots that move us, rather it’s the those ones that near perfection. That 30 foot putt that goes in the hole, the drive that is straight and long, the chip shot that bounces off the flag stick. It’s in those rare moments in a round that make us look like the pro that gets us back for another round.

This is becoming my new philosophy for a joyful life. This past year I have seen more joy and happiness than I have ever before. I have decided to do only those things that I love and live with the faith that if I do that success and prosperity will follow. Doing this requires that I approach life like I approach golf. Build on the times I hit the sweet spot. You see, you always have choices. You can dwell on the hardships of life or allow yourself to be uplifted by every success you experience. enthusiasm and joy are contagious. There are a million cliché’ sayings such as “Nothing succeeds like success” or “to be loved you must first be lovable”. Truthfully, in my wise old age I’m finally getting comfortable with life. It is no longer a battle against the forces of evil but rather a celebration of every achievement that reinforces that you are on the right path and doing some good in the world. Like the old saying, “even a bad day at golf is better than a day at work”, I have learned to quit working and have fun. Now, however, I have also allowed my worthiness to catch up with joy quotient so that the things I love and have fun doing provide for the success we are experiencing.

PS: my apologies to my friend Jim. I no longer turn on my phone when I am golfing. You see, I am learning.

The Sanity Clause

Although the holiday season can be filled with joy, for many of us it can be a time of stress and burning the candle at both ends. Usually, we have so many commitments to be out and about it's no wonder that the average person uses New Year resolutions not to begin a new helpful habit, but to just get back on track. We feel the need to make up for all the treats we ate or the wear and tear that we put on ourselves with parties, travel, and shopping till you drop!

Here's a few helpful hints to get you through:

If you travel this season, take your pillow with you. It can really help to have something familiar to use as a sleep aid. Avoid sleeping pills. You want good sleep, not the sleep of the dead. Sleeping pills can cause you sleep longer in one position which cuts off circulation to areas of the body, thus you wake up with aches and pains. Also, we are affected by the magnetic pull of the poles. It doesn't mater whether you current head of the bed is facing North, South, East or West; but do try to make sure that you are sleeping with the same directional orientation when away from home. This make your rest space much more comfortable.

Sitting too long in one position can cause all kinds of problems. Blood clots from thrombosis have killed more people on airplanes than terrorists. Whether you travel by car or plane, make sure you move about. Take advantage of rest stops in the car. On airplanes, move about during long trips and stroll the airports rather than just sitting for hours at the gate.

Now, I'm the last one to nag about your diet. Try to eat balanced. You know you are going to eat more treats and we won't debate whether you deserve them or not. However, intent makes a huge difference. Don't associate negative feelings such as “guilt” with food of any kind. Your body listens to you and emotions have a bigger role than we realize in digestion and how the body processes what we take in. Even subconsciously, if you are telling yourself “I know this isn't good for me” as you bite into something then you are setting up the body to process it as something not good. Don't expect good from negative intentions. Ever wonder where the saying “I ate something that didn't agree with me” came from? Chances are the body did agree with you and processed it exactly the way you set it up.

Finally, try to stick to your routine. If you work out on a regular basis , to stay with that. Even away from home set aside certain hours of the day for yourself whether it's to work out, meditate, or eat one wholesome meal. Control your own time rather than putting your life on hold until after the holidays.

Here's wishing you a happy, healthy holiday season filled with JOY! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

-Oops I did it again! Look for me and many of my friends at the Dickens Festival.

The Healing Power of Gratitude (reprinted from an earlier issue, worth a rerun at Thanksgiving)

Nothing makes us feel better than a heartfelt “Thank You”. It’s important to feel appreciated, it fuels the fires of our inner drive to help us continue with our efforts. Life isn’t about surviving, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s not even about earning a living; rather it’s about the mutual benefit we receive from interaction with others. We learn nothing from solitude. The infamous monks who go up on the mountain top to meditate gain no enlightenment until they come down and communicate with their pupils, the vision they garnered from their meditation. It’s the journey and the lessons that help us grow.

One of my favorite quotes is from the late Chief Dan George in the movie “The Outlaw Josey Wales”, in it he repeats the words told to him by the President when the tribal leaders were invited to Washington, “endeavour to persevere”. Sounds so much more worthy an effort than just merely surviving. I have always gained value from the precepts of being an “impeccable warrior”, that is to conduct yourself with dignity and taking full responsibility for your actions.

That being said, I want to thank all of you for the positive words of encouragement and support you have given me over the past few months. You have made a difference and have helped me to “Endeavour to persevere” during a difficult time. Recently I had been experiencing more and more pain in my wrist. I tried all my usual remedies, icing, wrapping and even massage but it just wasn’t improving. Now these type of injuries are common to massage therapists and I read articles on self care looking for some easy solution. It really began to worry me, even to the point of wondering if I was cut out for this career. So I put out the thought and asked for guidance. The answers came clear and strong.

Physically: I sought medical treatment firstly to get a clear diagnosis so that I knew what I was dealing with. First my physician tried steroid treatment which had no effect whatsoever. So then we had an MRI which confirmed that I had arthritic tendinitis and pinpointed the inflammation. Next we tried a Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drug which has given me great relief, reduced my pain from an 8 to about a 2 and has allowed me to continue to work as my body heals. Also some of you may have noticed me using some new strokes and using my forearms and left hand more recently during sessions. I will continue to learn techniques that allow me to improve my skills while putting less strain on my body.

Emotionally: YOU. I have had such positive feedback on everything I do. People have told me how much they enjoyed these articles and newsletters, appreciated my efforts in the community such as SGMT, and most of all for my body work. Let me share some examples; one client wrote, “Man, I wish I could come for a daily massage. If I were Oprah, I would hire you!!!” another wrote “I had my first massage from Michael in mid-December and was very impressed. Although I have Fibromyalgia, RA, and 2 torn menesci, I left the appointment pain-free and remained so for several hours, enabling me to Christmas shop and wrap gifts. What a treat! Thanks so much, Michael…I’ll be back for sure!”. Now I’m not sharing these to toot my own horn but rather to let you know that comments like these inspire me and most certainly helped me to recover every bit as much as the medicine the doctor prescribed. I continue to be an impeccable warrior not because I am strong but because I am stronger for connecting with all of you.

I am grateful that I have found a profession that allows me to do positive things for others. I am grateful for my health and that my work makes me healthier. I am grateful that because of my age and life experience I can connect with more people and share their health concerns. If I haven’t told you lately, “I love you” and thank you for letting me do work that I love.

_______________________________________________________________________________________-

Oops I did it again! The acting bug bit me as soon as I moved back into town on October first. Look for me as the Sheriff in "Murder By Poker" at the Sunriver Community Center, November 15th through November 19th. Performances are free to the public. Come out and enjoy an original old time Melodrama written and directed by my pal Gary Payne of SGMT and Ghost Tours.
