It's been a while since I last posted here. It has NOT been due to inactivity but just the opposite. We have grown tremendously in the past few years; coming from a lone therapist to the busiest local shop in the area doing 700+ massage hours each month.

During this holiday season we wanted to declare our gratitude to our friends, team members, networking connections, community partners and of course, to our wonderful clients who have made this success happen. All this is now happening with me being retired from active massage for the past 3 1/2 years. I'm grateful that many of my clients, who were so loyal to me as their therapist, have adopted one of our excellent team members, and have continued together, meeting and maintaining their wellness goals. I subscribe to the credo that you cannot evolve to the next level until you train your replacement and in this I have achieved this goal tenfold.

I am also grateful to be working with people in a profession that is inflation or depression proof. As long as we have physical bodies that are stressed from operating in a gravity environment that never turns off, there will be a need for body work. Fads come and go, junk science gets people to invest in so-called short cuts to health, and everyone is looking for that magic pill that helps you lose weight while sleep. In my time as a therapist I've seen people jump on the bandwagon of toxic foot baths, every kind of MLM, wands with magic crystals that remove pain and too many to recount. Truth is there is nothing magical about massage. We are wired for touch and respond in just the right way because of that. It's rare but we do see people whose conditioning has shorted out that wiring that make touch therapeutic. I feel sorry for people who don't have good associations with touch and been programmed to worship on the altar of "Modern Western Medicine". Never the less, we are able to help the vast majority of people and are humbled by the changes we can make in their lives.

Posture Up
Your missing out on a revolutionary experience if you haven’t yet dropped in on our Tuesday Morning class. Perhaps you don’t yet understand what the class is all about. Throughout my training in Structural Bodywork and applying this knowledge in over 5000 massages, I have helped many clients by teaching them exercises and stretches to over come pain. Honestly, most people forget how to do this “homework” by the time they drive home. To that end I have developed a class that teaches people how to use their bodies more effective without doing damage and causing pain to the joints.
Good posture just isn’t emphasized in the world today. As a result we have whole new generations that are suffering from aches and pains (most commonly in the neck and shoulders) from hours of repetitious actions such as keyboarding, texting, driving. What people don’t know, what isn’t being preached to them is that ALL of this pain and damage is totally preventable and reversible. Even your Doctor doesn’t know this because it is not part of their training. Face it, the western medical establishment doesn’t deal out health, they are trained to do damage control. Most doctors will never see a healthy person or one who has gotten better and because of that many will never see an example of unassisted healing.
So, because of this I have decided to be a voice to let you know that you can change your body. Soft tissue can be repatterned and reformed at any time in your life. You can overcome the pain associated with wear and tear and rebuild tissue. It’s never fun having a pain in the neck, but even more so when you finally come to the understanding that you caused it, you amplify it, and you can easily correct it. It is not a question of whether to exercise, it’s learning to exercise “Pain Free” and making sure your day to day movements and posture supports longevity with a real hope that mobility won’t be compromised.

Pilates on Main: Pilates for Everyone

Created by Joseph Pilates, the Pilates method is a system of exercises designed to strengthen the muscles in the elongated state. With the focus on creating a strong and flexible core, Pilates improves muscle control, coordination, and strength.

Originally developed to help immobilized patients in WWI, Pilates gained popularity when Joseph moved to the Unites States and set up his studio across from the New York City Ballet. Because of its diverse history, Pilates is now favored by athletes of all sorts as well as the medical community for issues ranging from the rehabilitation of injuries to the treatment of chronic back pain and neurological conditions.

One of the great things about Pilates, is the flexibility of it. Pilates workouts can be adapted to fit just about any need or goal. Utilizing mat work, special apparatus, and a bevy of qualified and caring trainers, Pilates on Main is well equipped to help clients meet those needs and attain their goals. Owner and skilled instructor, Sue Swensen has a deep passion and commitment for her studio and helping others in their fitness goals. The best part of teaching Pilates Sue says, “is the interaction with the client and the satisfaction of seeing the client progress in their practice of the Method.”

Pilates on Main is a unique and functional studio, aiming to create a positive environment in which clients individual concerns and needs can be heard and addressed. There are a multitude of options for anyone seeking to improve their quality of life and fitness level. These options range from private sessions to group classes at all levels. For more information, contact Sue Swensen at (435) 680-7163 or check them out at www.bodybalancebysue.com. The caring and professional staff are ready to help.

Note: I have been doing Pilates with Sue and her staff since September and I love it! It has made a

difference in my body. I didn't know much about Pilates before and now I “are” one. Make sure to

check them out and make your New Year body better....Michael Forrest, LMT

Overcoming the Holiday blues

For many people this time of the year is associated with joy, but for many others it reopens wounds,

grief,or sadness. It's hard for some to deal with feelings that come to visit each year, not unlike the

Ghost of Christmas past that visited Ebeneezer Scrooge in Dickens' “Christmas Carol”. All the more

reason to have compassion towards others in this season.

Granted some of this can be self inflicted by having too much on the schedule. Parties, Shopping,

indulging in too many goodies. We do it every year. Some of the problem may well be not being able

to simply say “no”, and most certainly we also don't know when to say “yes” to doing something nice

and healthful for ourselves. Make sure to take time to rest. Don't shop till you drop. Don't eat till you

burst. If you take care of yourself then you'll have more energy to spend helping others. Do find

balance. Look for opportunities to make a difference. Give gifts that empower life.

Get to know someone new in your neighborhood. Discover “Random Acts of Kindness”.

Wishing you all the Joy and Happiness that this season promises. Smile and pass it on!
