Overcoming the Holiday blues

For many people this time of the year is associated with joy, but for many others it reopens wounds,

grief,or sadness. It's hard for some to deal with feelings that come to visit each year, not unlike the

Ghost of Christmas past that visited Ebeneezer Scrooge in Dickens' “Christmas Carol”. All the more

reason to have compassion towards others in this season.

Granted some of this can be self inflicted by having too much on the schedule. Parties, Shopping,

indulging in too many goodies. We do it every year. Some of the problem may well be not being able

to simply say “no”, and most certainly we also don't know when to say “yes” to doing something nice

and healthful for ourselves. Make sure to take time to rest. Don't shop till you drop. Don't eat till you

burst. If you take care of yourself then you'll have more energy to spend helping others. Do find

balance. Look for opportunities to make a difference. Give gifts that empower life.

Get to know someone new in your neighborhood. Discover “Random Acts of Kindness”.

Wishing you all the Joy and Happiness that this season promises. Smile and pass it on!

Living a Joyful Life
My favorite word for many years has been “Joy”. It always amazes me how such a small word so perfectly expresses a beautiful emotional state of being. The older I get the more the pursuit of joy has taken priority in my life. I directly attribute this pursuit to the success how business has been experienced this past couple of years. I no longer desire to invest time, energy, or thought to matters that keep joy at a distance. How blessed I am to be practicing a profession that helps people eliminated pain from their life and assists them on empowering health. How rewarding to see the smiles on peoples faces when they come out of their massage sessions by any of our talented therapists. They know that we care about them.
When I teach the “Mind, Money and Power” class we discuss how you can never really create something that you “want or need”. Just saying”I want this...” or “I need this...” reaffirms to the subconscious mind that you are in a state of lack. Even reforming how we say something boosts the harmony of creating that thing in our life. Example: for most people you can never really “LOSE” weight..losing weight is kinda like losing your car keys...eventually you will find them again, they are usually never really lost, just misplaced. So it is with weight. You never really lose it, it just comes back to again later. Better to “Release” the weight. To let it go, which comes not so much from what you eat but rather from how you change your perception of yourself. That is why Diets don't work but “Live-its” do. Its really about a lifestyle change and changing the way you feel and interact with food. I know people who bless their food every meal and then after they say Amen they totally negate that blessing by saying something like “I know this isn't very good for me” or “a minute on the lips and ten years on the hips”.
This is true with any aspect of our lives. I now pursue the Joyful life because I quit working for a living, instead I am committed to letting my living work for me. I know longer invest time in doing things I don't love. I don't worry about making money ( I let the US Mint worry about that) instead I allow the universe to reward me for energy I invest in the things I love doing. Gratitude is a huge part of that. Gratitude doesn't allow you much time to worry about the economy and gratitude is a building block for success.
For the first time in my adult life I am worthy enough to be successful just for me. In the past, my success has been wrapped around taking care of others (bringing home the bacon) but being single and with the kids grown adds a new dimension. Celebrating my success and adding to my joy also means doing things that I love and that enhance the quality of my life like getting regular massages. Other things and a shout out to Sue over at “Pilates on Main” for my regular work outs, Katie Powell (The Powell Method) for voice coaching, Adan and Robin over at Optimum Health for my sessions in the hyperbaric chamber. It feels good to take care of myself with these things.
This year when you hear “Joy to World” take time to reflect on what you are doing to bring more joy into the lives of others. If that brings a smile to your face, build on it; if you don't have enough to smile about then consider what you can do to build a more joyful life.
In order to be loved, first make yourself lovable.....

Lessons from the “Karate Kid”....

The most important gift that Mr. Miyagi gave to young Daniel-san was muscle memory. It wasn't really important that the fence got painted or that the cars got waxed, want was important that the actions repeated over and over, mirrored the actions of the Karate “. Over the years I too have used muscle memory to teach people how to overcome postural and structural imbalances, thus relieving the source of chronic pain.

Our body is constructed of muscle that has been designed to work efficiently with gravity. We need gravity to strengthen muscles and then again gravity becomes a dreaded enemy when we move with improper form. In our modern society, we are being worn down by repetitious movement and bad posture. The most common complaint I treat is the sore shoulders and neck that is a direct result from too many hours in front of the computer. If you get locked in the same position for a long period of time it has the same effect on the tissue as doing the same exercise over and over. It becomes a strain on the body and results in damage.

Most people hear the voice of a parent in your head saying “Stand up straight” or “don't slouch”, the problem is that no one has shown you what standing up straight really is. Whenever I do a movement assessment and reset someone in correct posture, it feels very strange to them. We become so invested in our bad posture that standing incorrectly feels comfortable and natural. It takes work to make the corrections and, quite frankly, most people are lazy. You have to be truly “sick and tired of being sick and tired” before someone develops the motivation for change.

This month on Wednesday October 26th at 7 pm I am leading a FREE class “Pain Free Movement”. I challenge you to come if:

      1. you started and exercise class and gave up because it hurt or was too difficult.

      2. You have chronic pain in your neck and shoulders, feet, or low back, but don't remember a specific injury to them

      3. recently lost significant weight or had surgery, and don't feel “at home” with the changes to your body

      4. Want to avoid surgery to replace knees, hips, or back surgery

If any of these statements are true, we can help. The purpose of this class is to teach you how to use your body effectively in gravity. To learn re-patterning exercises that will aid you correcting posture and strengthening weak muscle groups. To turn back the clock because no matter how old you are, tissue can be reformed and strengthened. It is my desire to give you a message of hope where others are telling you there's nothing you can do with negative message like “everyone in our family has bad knees (or backs or whatever)”, “This surgery is common for people your age”, “ You're just going to have live with this pain”

Your body is your most perfect dance partner, where you lead it...it will follow”

Water, Water everywhere....

Water, is the most essential element, next to air, to our survival. Water truly is everywhere, still most take it for granted. Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body, and without it, we would die in a few days. The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs 90%. A mere 2% drop in the body's water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen.

Water is important to the mechanics of the human body. The body cannot work without it, just as a car cannot run without gas and oil. In fact, all the cell and organ functions made up in our entire anatomy and physiology depend on water for their functioning.

Water serves as a lubricant

Water forms the base for saliva

Water forms the fluids that surround the joints.

Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed through perspiration.

Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste- the best detox agent.

Regulates metabolism

How Much Water does the Body Need? A good estimate is to take the body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That gives you the number of ounces of water per day that the client needs to drink. For example, if the client weighs 150 pounds, he/she should drink at least 75 ounces of water per day. If they exercise, they should drink another eight ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes they are active. If they drink alcohol, they should drink at least an equal amount of water.

At least twenty percent of the water the body needs will come from the foods it consumes. The rest will come from the beverages it takes in. Water is the best choice, the body knows to process water straight into the cells of the body without secreting enzymes and acids needed for chemically breaking down everything else that goes down the gullet; Fluids such as sweetened soft drinks and sodas have added corn syrup that adds extra calories and may contain caffeine. Sports drinks contain electrolytes and may be beneficial; just look out for added sugar and calories that may not be wanted. Fruit and vegetable juice are a good food because they have vitamins and nutrients but may not do much to keep you hydrated (read labels, however -- vegetable juices may be high in sodium). Waters that have flavoring, will be treated and processed in the body as a food with one exception; Citrus! Lemon or lime do not trigger enzymes for digestion probably because of there acidic content, so that these fluids are processed as water and go straight into the cells of the body.

Is Gravity getting you down?

“Astronauts lose muscle mass from even short periods in weightlessness”

Our system of skeletal and muscle systems were designed to efficiently work in a gravity environment. Unfortunately, most us do not use this system correctly and most of our chronic aches and pains come from poor posture and not using our muscles correctly with the force of gravity. Gravity is a constant that we cannot turn off, nor do we want too. Our muscles need the pull of gravity strengthen and build muscle tissue. They were designed to work together and each muscle has a specific task that it was designed to do.

Where we get into trouble is when we don’t use the muscles the way they were designed. The body has a way of creating a structure based on how we move and what we demand of the muscles. Example: forward rotated shoulders. Because of the way we are built; being bipedal, forward focusing eyes, tactile use of the hands; most humans eventually get shoulders that have short tissue in the front (pectoralis) and over stretched/lengthened tissue in the rear (rhomboids). Ideally these two groups should form a concentric diamond shape <>. The most common complaint I get is soreness in the upper back/neck region just because of this. Invariably, the back tissue is over stretched with micro tears that we commonly call “knots” while the chest tissue is tight and shorted and painful to manipulate. Even though it feels good to work the muscles of the back, the only true permanent relief you can get is by working the chest muscles and lengthening that tissue to bring balance between front and rear compartments of shoulders. There are seven muscles in the rotator cuff of the shoulder and when they are all properly engaged the shoulder becomes the one joint with the most mobility. Most of us only actually use 4 to 5 of these muscles so that we ask some muscles to do a greater share of the work while others “sleep”. Over use of certain muscle is the most common wear and tear that translates into pain. This is the reason that fast ball pitchers like Nolan Ryan have long careers while curve ball pitchers like Sandy Koufax have elbow and shoulders problems and shorter careers. It’s all about mechanics not about how hard you throw.

Working sports massage at Triathlons and Marathons, I can even assess how runners aren’t properly using leg muscles by where they get cramps. Someone who runs “shuffle footed” by not fully bending their knee generally gets hamstring cramps from not engaging their Quads enough. This may also be exaggerated by running up or down hills. All in all, the muscles don’t lie and you don’t have to be “House, MD” to figure out what went wrong with the runners form.

You don’t have to be an elite athlete to benefit from postural/structural coaching. We all are subject to the effects of gravity. Most people who have poor posture or balance/movement problems don’t even know what good posture for their structure is. We all hear the voice of our Mom in our head telling us to “stand up straight” or “don’t slouch” but few of us have ever been shown what good standing up straight posture is. There was a reason for the “charm schools” of the past where young girls were taught to move with balance and grace while balancing a book on their head. We find good structure appealing and bad posture unattractive. Good structure is healthy and athletic, while poor posture is weak and awkward. What we do with our bodies shapes and defines us. Forensic scientists can tell what a person did for a living by the build up of bone tissue were the muscle attached. Cowboys get bowlegged from all that time in the saddle (wear high heeled cowboy boots didn’t help much either). My point is that the body is an amazing machine that will do the tasks we ask of it. If you think that your bad posture is genetic, you are wrong. It comes from patterning yourself and the way you stand and move from other members of the family. If you think that there is nothing you can do about the years of abuse that have shaped the body you now have, you are wrong. You can repattern how you move and use your muscles.

We can help. We have been trained in “Movement Assessment” and from the feet up we can help you be more effective in how you deal with gravity. We can help you with body work that lengthens short tissue and by teaching you repatterning exercises that increase mobility and balance. Since we can’t turn off gravity, we can do the next best thing when you are finally sick and tired of being sick and tired, and that is teach you how to move better with a lot less pain.

Chasing illness or empowering wellness?

the most import ingredient you can have for good health is hope”

The primary difference between traditional Western medicine and alternative approaches is attitude and philosophy. Debates will rage on over technology and protocols but the true difference is really about objectives.

Western medicine is still relatively new in both practice and concept with most advances occurring in a matter of decades. Alternative medicine is based on traditions that are based on centuries of practice and application.

Western medicine focus is on symptoms and overcoming disease. If something doesn’t work properly, remove it, either by surgery or by pharmaceuticals. Much as I love the TV show “House” the forensic focus is on tracking down symptoms in a Sherlock Holmes fashion. The attitude is one of eliminating disease. There are times when this is the perfect approach but often it is not because in order for your doctor to be a detective they are reliant on information that only you can give. The old saying “physician heal thyself”, to me means that each of us must be our own physician. Ultimately, we are the ones who bear the responsiblity for our own health care, even the when, where, who, and how of the care “we” initiate is dependant on our decision making process. The public service ad of recent years encouraging people to ask questions of their doctor is key to what I’m communicating about who has the responsibility for your health care.

Alternative medicine at it’s best has a holistic approach that looks at the entire person. Rather than focusing on the disease or malfunction, the focus is on bringing the body back into balance. The attitude is one of empowering wellness. Homeostasis is the state of being harmonious with wellness. It is based on the belief that the body wants to function in a state of wellness, therefore, the treatment is about assisting the healing process.

Massage is a treatment that bridges both approaches. Injury massage is about addressing malfunction caused by trauma. Therapeutic massage is all about assisting the bodies healing process. Massage is an effective companion modality for both approaches and represents a tool you can utilize no matter what your healthcare approach is.

It pays to enter every month…pass it on! We only had 4 entries this month??? You can't win if you don't enter!

*note drawing winners must claim their free massage within 30 days of winning
