The Sanity Clause

Although the holiday season can be filled with joy, for many of us it can be a time of stress and burning the candle at both ends. Usually, we have so many commitments to be out and about it's no wonder that the average person uses New Year resolutions not to begin a new helpful habit, but to just get back on track. We feel the need to make up for all the treats we ate or the wear and tear that we put on ourselves with parties, travel, and shopping till you drop!

Here's a few helpful hints to get you through:

If you travel this season, take your pillow with you. It can really help to have something familiar to use as a sleep aid. Avoid sleeping pills. You want good sleep, not the sleep of the dead. Sleeping pills can cause you sleep longer in one position which cuts off circulation to areas of the body, thus you wake up with aches and pains. Also, we are affected by the magnetic pull of the poles. It doesn't mater whether you current head of the bed is facing North, South, East or West; but do try to make sure that you are sleeping with the same directional orientation when away from home. This make your rest space much more comfortable.

Sitting too long in one position can cause all kinds of problems. Blood clots from thrombosis have killed more people on airplanes than terrorists. Whether you travel by car or plane, make sure you move about. Take advantage of rest stops in the car. On airplanes, move about during long trips and stroll the airports rather than just sitting for hours at the gate.

Now, I'm the last one to nag about your diet. Try to eat balanced. You know you are going to eat more treats and we won't debate whether you deserve them or not. However, intent makes a huge difference. Don't associate negative feelings such as “guilt” with food of any kind. Your body listens to you and emotions have a bigger role than we realize in digestion and how the body processes what we take in. Even subconsciously, if you are telling yourself “I know this isn't good for me” as you bite into something then you are setting up the body to process it as something not good. Don't expect good from negative intentions. Ever wonder where the saying “I ate something that didn't agree with me” came from? Chances are the body did agree with you and processed it exactly the way you set it up.

Finally, try to stick to your routine. If you work out on a regular basis , to stay with that. Even away from home set aside certain hours of the day for yourself whether it's to work out, meditate, or eat one wholesome meal. Control your own time rather than putting your life on hold until after the holidays.

Here's wishing you a happy, healthy holiday season filled with JOY! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Healing Power of Gratitude (reprinted from an earlier issue, worth a rerun at Thanksgiving)

Nothing makes us feel better than a heartfelt “Thank You”. It’s important to feel appreciated, it fuels the fires of our inner drive to help us continue with our efforts. Life isn’t about surviving, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s not even about earning a living; rather it’s about the mutual benefit we receive from interaction with others. We learn nothing from solitude. The infamous monks who go up on the mountain top to meditate gain no enlightenment until they come down and communicate with their pupils, the vision they garnered from their meditation. It’s the journey and the lessons that help us grow.

One of my favorite quotes is from the late Chief Dan George in the movie “The Outlaw Josey Wales”, in it he repeats the words told to him by the President when the tribal leaders were invited to Washington, “endeavour to persevere”. Sounds so much more worthy an effort than just merely surviving. I have always gained value from the precepts of being an “impeccable warrior”, that is to conduct yourself with dignity and taking full responsibility for your actions.

That being said, I want to thank all of you for the positive words of encouragement and support you have given me over the past few months. You have made a difference and have helped me to “Endeavour to persevere” during a difficult time. Recently I had been experiencing more and more pain in my wrist. I tried all my usual remedies, icing, wrapping and even massage but it just wasn’t improving. Now these type of injuries are common to massage therapists and I read articles on self care looking for some easy solution. It really began to worry me, even to the point of wondering if I was cut out for this career. So I put out the thought and asked for guidance. The answers came clear and strong.

Physically: I sought medical treatment firstly to get a clear diagnosis so that I knew what I was dealing with. First my physician tried steroid treatment which had no effect whatsoever. So then we had an MRI which confirmed that I had arthritic tendinitis and pinpointed the inflammation. Next we tried a Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drug which has given me great relief, reduced my pain from an 8 to about a 2 and has allowed me to continue to work as my body heals. Also some of you may have noticed me using some new strokes and using my forearms and left hand more recently during sessions. I will continue to learn techniques that allow me to improve my skills while putting less strain on my body.

Emotionally: YOU. I have had such positive feedback on everything I do. People have told me how much they enjoyed these articles and newsletters, appreciated my efforts in the community such as SGMT, and most of all for my body work. Let me share some examples; one client wrote, “Man, I wish I could come for a daily massage. If I were Oprah, I would hire you!!!” another wrote “I had my first massage from Michael in mid-December and was very impressed. Although I have Fibromyalgia, RA, and 2 torn menesci, I left the appointment pain-free and remained so for several hours, enabling me to Christmas shop and wrap gifts. What a treat! Thanks so much, Michael…I’ll be back for sure!”. Now I’m not sharing these to toot my own horn but rather to let you know that comments like these inspire me and most certainly helped me to recover every bit as much as the medicine the doctor prescribed. I continue to be an impeccable warrior not because I am strong but because I am stronger for connecting with all of you.

I am grateful that I have found a profession that allows me to do positive things for others. I am grateful for my health and that my work makes me healthier. I am grateful that because of my age and life experience I can connect with more people and share their health concerns. If I haven’t told you lately, “I love you” and thank you for letting me do work that I love.

People Wake Up!

Over the course of my life, I've seen an intrusion creep into our day to day existence that is killing each one of us little by little. Like the “death of a thousand cuts”, this torture affects us all as we blindly go by just as lemmings to a cliff. I'm talking about way we eat in America. Let me share my own personal experience beginning last February when I decided to give up eating or drinking anything with “High Fructose Corn Syrup”. I was addicted to soda pop. I easily went through 12 cans everyday. It was hard, but my plan included mega-dozing on citrus fruit to over come the cravings the first 30 days. I also increased my water intake. It worked and since then I have lost 30 pounds and is has stayed off. I now hover around 220 lbs which is territory I hadn't seen in over 20 years. Now in recent news, I see where the food distributors have asked the FDA to change the name of high fructose corn syrup to something more appealing such as “corn sugar”. This the same thing that happened a few years ago with artificial sweeteners. Now those poisons have attractive names like Splenda or Equate (for more information go to http://www.buzzle.com/articles/sucralose-vs-aspartame.html ). The fact remains that these are artificial substances that the body doesn't know how to process and often stores in the tissues rather than eliminating them. Long term effects are not known or just becoming noticeable because these substances are relatively new. In the case of corn syrup, these pleadings with the FDA were supposedly initiated to overcome the bad press that corn syrup had gotten in recent years. Shakespeare said, “a rose by any other name is still a rose.” However, the ad rep's from Madison Avenue have found that consumers are willing to accept any product that is cleverly packaged, so the food brokers have come up with strategies that increase profits while substituting natural ingredients for far cheaper artificial ones. All the while, our supposed “watchdog” agencies in the government play a complicit role, AS DO YOU! After all, most people don't read ingredients on packaging or do the have the degrees in chemistry to decipher complex names, the just purchase products because of the leprechaun or rainbow billed toucan. We don't market the same way as other countries where people buy fresh foods daily, we have been trained to stock up for weeks or longer, so shelve life and preservatives govern what is available. I remember going to the market in Mexico and all the chicken was yellow, quite different from here where the chicken is bulked up to twice the size of natural. Fruits and vegetables are picked before they ripen on the vine and have full nutrient value, so they ripen in crates on trucks or warehouses. Here's a little history lesson just to show one dimension of how we have been manipulated over the years. After world war 2 the baby boomer generation spread quickly from the cities into the suburbs. The little corner market became a thing of the past, the interstates were built, advances in electric appliances (no more blocks of ice), and population became spread out of greater distances. Between greater demands by consumers and the need for greater shelf life, food products became juiced with preservatives and competition required more elaborate packaging. In the late 50's Castro took over Cuba where a huge chunk of our cane sugar was imported from, in the next decade revolutions and unrest also had an effect on sugar costs. First attempts at sugar substitutes were pretty awful with heavy aftertastes. Even the reports of lab rats getting cancer from saccharine didn't deter the food industry. Why? What was at stake?...money, lots of money. First convince the American public that sugar was bad for them. Convince them that getting used to the after taste in substitutes was worthwhile. Replace sugar with the far cheaper corn syrup all the while justify the increasing price hikes because of the cost of sugar. In a few short years, they had successfully replaced sugar with soft drinks that cost many times more using ingredients that cost far less. Profits for Pepsi, Coca Cola and the rest went through the roof. Pepsi bought chains like Taco Bell with these new profits. Introduce new sodas that have additional ingredients like caffeine such as Mountain Dew and people began to become addicted to sodas sweet or sugar free and consume even more. No body protested, in fact people sang along with the jingles like “I'd like to buy the world a Coke” or “Whatever shape you're in”(seven up), how could something be bad for you that is named after a doctor? In recent years, there has been a huge corn shortage because of ethanol fuels. Suddenly, the soda companies are trying to give sugar a come back because now it's cheaper than corn syrup, coke even promoted a vintage version made with real sugar last year. Oh by the way, long time tobacco companies who had a longtime history of making a product that was bad for you seem good (Winston taste good like a cigarette should) diversified many years ago to over come the government's regulation of their industry by buying out many of our major food companies such as General Mills. Think they would change their ways? Are you mad yet? Like being manipulated? All this happened in my lifetime. Check the facts, read the labels, think about what you are putting into your body and into your sweet children's bodies. Then get mad and start the change.

Epson Salts

It seems lately I have recommended
Epson Salts to many of our clients to
help recover from muscle soreness due to activity or injury.
Epson salts have been around for along time, they are "Magnesium Sulfate"
and you have probably heard of the importance of Calcium and Magnesium
in the proper function of the muscles. There has been some research that
shows that taking these two together as oral supplements can counteract each
other, and the most effective way to add these supplements to you daily regimine,
is to take Calcium orally and Magnesium topically.
Bathing with a cup of Epson salts, is absorbed through the skin and immediately
begins to calm the muscle receptors which lessens the muscle tension that causes
pain. Relaxing, calming, and helping the muscles begin the healing process of
returning to homeostasis.
Certainly an old time remedy, it is inexpensive, it works and should be stocked in
everyones medicine cabinet.

Diane Biasi is contributing our article this month: Diane has been a big help training our therapists in the doTERRA Aromatouch protocol. We appreciate all she does to help us grow.

Euphoric, relaxed, energized, de-stressed: these are some of the comments recipients of the Aromatouch technique have used to describe how they felt after an Aromatouch technique session. Eight pure essential oils or oil blends applied on the back and feet help to make this experience possible: Balance , Lavender, OnGuard , Melaleuca, Aromatouch , Deep Blue, Wild Orange and Peppermint meld together for a unique experience.

doTERRA has developed a new oil application technique called the Aroma Touch Technique. It is a clinical approach to essential oil application and a powerful, accessible way for everyone to experience the healing powers of essential oils. The technique was developed by Dr. David K. Hill, a leading expert in essential oils for use for medicinal benefit.

I first learned the AromaTouch technique in a room full of essential oil enthusiasts at the Dixie Center. Dr. Hill taught us the details of each oil used in the technique and why they are in the technique. Then he taught us about the sympathetic response and the parasympathetic response and the four areas addressed by the technique such as stress, toxins, inflammation and balance. By the middle of the day we were ready for our turn on the table. We learned by watching, doing and then experiencing the treatment by a rotation of 3 students with one massage table. If you can imagine a convention sized room with 50 or so massage tables and each of us anticipating our turn. The aroma in the room was intoxicating. The combination of the eight oils creates it own unique smell. It was an incredible experience to be taught by the developer of the technique and to watch so many people react to the treatment. Everyone had a unique response. But, all were benefited and anxious to go home and teach their associates or family members.

As the flu season kicked in I was now armed with a technique that would help sick family members but I also had a technique that I could use for wellness or an aching back after a long trip. Many times last winter I applied the oils of the Aromatouch technique on my eight year old son. When he had a flu virus with a fever, I would apply the eight oils and his fever would drop immediately, sometimes by one point, sometimes more. Most of the time, he would wake up fever free and feeling well and he would go back to school the next day. If he didn’t return the next day, he would return to school within a couple of days when other kids with the same virus were out of school for the week.

My husband is a hard working person physically, and he has some nerve damage. When he is in pain he will apply the oil blend Deep Blue on his knees or neck or where ever he has damage. On severe days, I apply the entire Aromatouch technique on him and he not only sleeps well but feels relief from his ailments. I have been traveling a lot this summer on road trips. When I was traveling alone I would apply the eight oils on my spine before and/or after my drive as far as I could reach on my spine. They helped tremendously to keep me pain free and able to handle a long drive myself. Of course, Michaeal’s massages would help me in between my trips. Sometimes, I would bring him a bottle of the Aromatouch blend for him to apply on my shoulders during a massage.

I have been pleased to teach Michael and his team of massage therapists the AromaTouch technique. It is a great benefit to me to have the service offered on his menu. There are many times when I am too busy to apply it to my husband or times I wish he could apply it to me and was not available. It is a great benefit to our community to have the Aromatouch treamtent being available to all us.

The Aromatouch treatment can be applied as often as necessary to help the body maintain health or to help those with health issues. Athletes benefit from the treatment either before and/or after an event. It can also be applied to the calves as well. I applied it to the back of my mother’s knees last week when she was in severe pain from pinched nerves. She was out of bed in 30 minutes. It can be adapted to add essential oils for a specific need or a therapist can modify the treatment as necessary for individual needs. It would be a great add-on prior to a massage for health maintenance or sore muscles. The massage room would also smell heavenly and benefit you aromatically as well.

Some people like to receive a weekly treatment, some like to have it applied monthly.

The uses of essential oils are vast and represent a well-documented model for improving overall health. Widespread acceptance of essential oils has led many to choose the more natural approach to healing and prevention. doTERRA CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils have been recognized as the most therapeutic oils in the world.

This month add Aroma-Touch to any massage session for half price ($15.00) Try it, You'll love it!
